Parc de Bagatelle: 9,000 Roses

Bookmark and Share

Situated in the Northwest corner of the Bois de Boulogne, there is a rose garden. Imagine 9,000 flowers in bloom during the months of June and July and what it must be like to go walking among the 1200 species of roses so carefully tended.

Situated there, is the Chateau Bagatelle with a fascinating history. In the year 1775, the wife of King Louis XIV, Marie-Antoinette, challenged the king's brother, Comte d'Artois, to build a chateau in the park within 90 days. Enlisting some 900 workmen, round the clock, the chateau was completed in a little over sixty days. In 1777 there was a party held there in honor of the King, during which a new indoor table game was debuted. It involved hitting a white ball into corner pockets with a cue stick. The game was called "bagatelle" and thus the little chateau acquired its name.
