MUSEE COGNACQ - JAY / SMALL MUSEUMS WITH HUGE APPEAL

Bookmark and Share

This sweet museum in the heart of the Marais, houses the collection of Ernest Cognacq and his wife, Marie- Louise Jay, founders of the grand department store, La Samaritaine.

Opened in 1869, the success of this venture provided the couple with vast amounts of wealth, which enabled them to collect objects, furniture and paintings from their favorite century, the 18th.

Housed in the historic 16th century residence, the Hotel de Donon, exquisite paneled rooms provide the backdrop for this stunning collection.

Spend an hour here and be transported back to another century. Paintings by Fragonard, Tiepolo and Boucher, among others, are spectacular.

This is a museum which you will want to come back to, again and again...a jewel box with a courtyard.
