Bookmark and Share

On August 23, 1572 with the sounding of the bell at this church, thousands of Protestant Huguenots were murdered by Catholics in what is now known as the Saint Bartholomew’s Day Massacre.

Followers of Charles IX and Catherine de Medici slaughtererd the Protestant guests, come to celebrate the marriage of Henri de Navarre to Marguerite de Valois. The Churchwarden’s Pew, built in 1683, after drawings by Charles Le Brun, is notable, along with some finely preserved stained glass.

Great French architect, Louis Le Vau (died 1670) whose works include the Palace of Versailles, is buried here.
