My first trip to Fauchon was accidental. I was meandering, and I happened to meander onto the Place de la Madeleine.

At the portal of Fauchon, I took a deep breath and stepped inside. Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore. Wait a minute, is that a throne I see? Is this the Queen of Food’s palace?

“ Welcome to Fauchon, Madame. We specialize in the world’s finest gourmet items and our brand attests to the heights we have ascended to, while attempting to satisfy the basic needs of global foodies.” Well, no one actually greeted me upon entering Fauchon, but the message is loud and clear. Food is serious business. If you have been searching for the elusive green lentil from Le Puy, or a jar of small young turnips for your next soiree, head straight for the epicerie. For breads and pastries, chocolates and killer caramels, check out the patisserie. Entering a personal hypoglycemic drop-out zone of epic proportions, which only the finest of digestibles will cure? The traiteur can provide you with a sampling of cheese and pate, which could save your life.
Tiny tea tins for travelers, strawberry rose petal jam, lavender honey and bars of dark chocolate with almonds, will find their way into your shopping basket. Cram as much of this stuff as you can into your suitcase, and bring a bit of Paris home.

The story begins with a man committed to exposing Parisians to foods from around the world. His name was Ferdinand Hediard and in 1854 he opened shop.
