The average Frenchman consumes approximately 40 pounds of cheese per year, which keeps fromageries like Barthelemy, in business.

This is no ordinary cheese shop. It’s tiny and bustling and in Winter months, Heads of State rub shoulders with Catherine Deneuve, vying for a portion of the much acclaimed, Swiss Vacherin. There is a huge variety of cow, goat and sheep’s milk cheeses, enough to perpetually be expanding your appetite for tasting, or degustation, which is a sampling of cheeses offered by restaurants, which are also fromageries. If it’s a picnic by the Seine you are composing, Barthelemy can provide the wine and biscuits as well. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Passionate about cheese, Madame Cantin lays claim to one of the loveliest fromageries in Paris. High praise for the quality of her cheeses, is well-earned. Some of the best restaurants in town serve cheese that has been aged in the cellars beneath the shop. Her Saint-Antoine triple-cream cow’s milk cheese is downright sublime. Hello, fellow Americans. One visit to this cheese store, and you will never again ingest a piece of cheese that has been packaged in plastic.
